Early miners and loggers often supplemented their income with gardens and small farms. Large agricultural attempts were made by a sheep rancher, Arthur Gould, in the 1930s near Beechwood. Another large attempt was made near Amasa, the Triangle Ranch, which specialized in both cattle and sheep. This dissolved in the 1950s. The Potato farmers flourished in the 1930s, in the Mansfield area on the Eastern side of the county, and two major growers still exist. Agricultural land use in the years 1970-present has been reduced to less than 12% of the county area. In 1970, farm income totaled $161,000 over expenses, in 1995, $-10,000, in loss. In 1990 the highest value of production was found in Potatoes--$911,000.
