IRON COUNTY CONSTRUCTION PERMITS PROCEDURES

To act as a guide through the maze of obtaining permits, our office has compiled this checklist of steps. The applicable steps should be completed. The type of building and location determines which of the items on the checklist are applicable. All projects will require numbers 1 and 6a, while other projects will require more steps. As an example, a new home might require all or most of the steps while a storage building or new deck might require onlly numbers 1 and 6a.

____1. Zoning -- Zoning involves where a building is placed on the property. There are different policies for setbacks, etc. in different jurisdictions. See zoning administrators for the contact person in your township or city.

____2. Septic and well permits are obtained from the Iron-Dickinson Health Department - Contact Louis Johnson, Sanitarian, at 906-265-4172. However, if your project is east of the Michigamme River, then obtain the permits from Darren Dayeart at 906-774-1868 Ext. 4

____3. If your project will impact wetlands or waterways, contact Jim Careon or Cary Gustafson, MI DEQ, at 906-875-2071.

____4. New driveways - off a County road, call the Iron County Road Commission at 906-265-6686 or off a state highway, call MIDOT at 906-875-6644.

____5. Soil Erosion & Sedimentation Permit -- If construction is within 500 feet of water or will be disturbing more than an acre of land, contact Bob Gussert at 906-875-3765.
